Curry College Learning Commons Opens Second Phase October 7, 2019 Milton, MA—The new Curry College Learning Commons, featuring the state-of-the-art Science and Research Center, is now open and serving the campus community. During the College’s annual Homecoming and Family Weekend October 4-6, alumni and families were welcomed and introduced to the facility for the first time, with tours and “Curry in the Classroom” sessions throughout the day on Saturday. At a special reception on Friday night, College President Kenneth K. Quigley, Jr. said “The Learning Commons is now truly transforming how our students, faculty and staff come together on campus. Here and now, student support, science and research achievement, and the Curry community meet in a physical hub that represents our mission- to provide a rich blend of liberal arts and career-directed programs for all styles of learners. Learning at Curry extends beyond the classroom, and there is no stronger evidence of that than the building we are celebrating tonight.” The first phase of The Learning Commons, which opened in January 2019, included Active Learning classrooms, Advising and Academic Success offices, student collaboration and 24/7 study spaces, and labs for physics, organic chemistry and biology, and chemistry research. Phase Two of The Learning Commons includes: • The Learning Commons Café (serving Starbucks® coffee products) • The Quantitative Commons to support curricular and co-curricular programming in math, statistics, and quantitative reasoning • Seminar rooms • The Writing Center, Speaking Center, Academic Enrichment Center, and Study Away Programs • Math, Science, and Peer Tutoring • Assistive Technology Lab • Disability Services • New science labs for: Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Cell and Molecular Biology • Faculty offices • Additional Student Collaboration and 24/7 Study Space Tours of the building included demonstrations of the cutting-edge Anatomage virtual dissector by faculty members. The tool will be used primarily in anatomy and physiology labs, as well as for forensics and biology courses. The Learning Commons was designed to support the success of every student at Curry by providing a space and tools that facilitate the College’s approach to teaching and learning by mentoring and empowering students to help them achieve their ambitions. This powerful new feature of the Curry campus is an embodiment of the College’s mission and strategic vision for the future.
